In December 1995, G&D purchased Security Card Systems in Markham, ON, a well established magnetic stripe card production company. By 2000, G&D had realized their growth towards a majority share of the Canadian market. With development and trials dating back to 1997, G&D recently played the leading role in the EMV chip migration, with over 101 million credit and debit smart cards (contact/contactless/dual interface) across Canada from August 2008 to the end of 2011. The majority of secure financial cards in the Canadian wallet are produced by G&D. Today, with a work force that has grown from approximately 250 to 550 in little over 5 years, the facility in Markham is also host to the newly certified North American TSM hub (Trusted Service Manager) which will play a key role in NFC application management and provisioning, helping to enable the evolving mobile ecosystem in Canada. The Markham facility continues to be certified to produce Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diner’s Club International and all major chip card associations.

G&D also provides secure cards and solutions to governments and government agencies in Canada in the areas of Driver's Licences, Health cards, Transit and Gaming. In 2007, G&D produced and delivered the high-secure Driver's Licence and in 2008, the enhanced Driver's Licence for the province of Ontario. In transit, G&D has supplied transit passes for the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) since 1990, and more recently, the Presto Pass, a contactless transit pass for the Greater Toronto Transit Authority.

Banknote Printing and Currency Processing

On October 22, 1999, G&D acquired the world’s fourth largest commercial banknote printing works, BA Banknote of Ottawa, ON, a widely respected Canadian-owned security printer for 133 years. Printing half the currency in Canada as well as international currency, the focus has been solely on banknote printing, quality, security and productivity. Over $17 million has been spent in capital investments (equipment and machinery) to enhance the high standard of security printing and many changes were made in order to ensure BA’s position within the banknote printers in the world.

The Software Solutions unit, a key Currency Processing R&D facility for G&D globally sits in the city of Vaughan, Ontario. Several years ago, G&D developed inventory management software for use between the Canadian commercial banks and the Central Bank for the Note Exchange System and continue to support the software today. G&D also provides Vault management systems and software, used by all major cash processors in Canada, as well as working on a large development project for a new vault system for the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank. Over the last few years, staff has more than doubled which resulted in an expanded location.
