Reducing our ecological footprint

We are working consistently to reduce the impact of our economic activities on the environment. We start with ourselves by systematically introducing resource-saving processes and technologies at our company locations worldwide. We also join forces with partners along the value chain: sustainability aspects such as material selection and emissions reduction play a central role in the new development and continuous optimization of our products. We are also involved in various networks such as the UN Global Compact and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and are a founding member of the "Munich Business Climate Pact".

Climate protection at G+D: on the way to Net Zero

As a company, we are doing our part to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. We therefore want to reduce our emissions to zero by 2040. Our voluntary climate targets meet the highest scientific standards and are based on the criteria of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Validated Climate Targets and Transparent Progress Disclosure

Our targets have been validated and approved by the SBTi. With the approval of our climate targets by the SBTi, we have reached another important milestone that strengthens our position as a responsible and future-oriented company.

Our annual performance disclosure via the CDP underlines our commitment to transparency and sustainability. This enables us to continuously measure our progress and identify further potential for optimization.

Our decarbonization roadmap

To achieve our climate targets, we are focusing on specific levers for decarbonization both within our own operations and along our value chain, as defined in our Climate Transition Plan

Our energy efficiency program is dedicated to reducing energy consumption by rethinking existing processes and integrating innovative technologies.

We plan to electrify our production sites, replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources and transition our infrastructure to increase the generation of renewable energy.

We focus on transitioning to renewable electricity at our locations through our own generation and the purchase of high-quality renewable electricity certificates.

We integrate environmental aspects into our product design process and are committed to decreasing our product emissions by reducing and substituting material input.

Our supplier engagement program emphasizes on enhancing data transparency, selecting key suppliers, and forming strategic collaborations to reduce GHG emissions in our supply chain.

Sustainability in the G+D product portfolio

With our products and services, we want to support our customers in achieving their own sustainability goals and also enable them to fulfil their customers' requirements for sustainable products. Our product development follows the "sustainability-by-design" approach: this means that we consider the entire life cycle of a product right from the start.

In 2024, we have specifically included "sustainability-by-design" criteria in the requirements for the product development process. From the procurement of materials to the handling of the product after its end of use. In this way, we can promote product innovations and technologies in a targeted manner. And that makes us a pioneer when it comes to resource-saving security technologies.

Sustainable product examples

G+D credit cards: Convego Parley Ocean, Convego Natural and Convego Recycled
Payment Cards

We are committed to completely phasing out the use of Virgin Plastic in payment cards by 2030. This means that we are increasingly using recycled, compostable or biodegradable plastic materials and thus also further reduce the CO2 footprint of the cards. 

With Convego® Beyond, we have created a wide range of eco-friendly products and services. These include payment cards made from recycled PVC material, from renewable biomass such as polylactic acid or made from plastic collected from oceans and coastal areas. 

Banknotes

Our innovative, award-winning Green Banknote makes a key contribution to a more sustainable cash cycle. It is made of certified natural fibers with only as much plastic as absolutely necessary. In addition, thanks to an optimized manufacturing process, it produces fewer emissions than conventional banknotes – with the same service life. The banknote paper is based on a fibre mix of organic cotton and FSC-certified cellulose from European forestry. 

In order to make the cash cycle more sustainable beyond banknotes, we launched the Green Cash Cycle Initiative in 2022. This includes a wide range of measures, from the packaging of banknotes to transport and waste reduction.

SIM Cards / eSIM

SIM cards have always kept the world connected. Even though they are getting smaller and smaller, their impact on the environment has remained the same – they still come in a credit card-sized transport holder. This is where G+D's digital eSIM management solution comes into play: The removable SIM card is replaced by an embedded SIM chip that the manufacturer installs directly in the mobile device. The result: less plastic, less transport effort, less waste and fewer climate-damaging emissions.

Passports

In 2024, G+D will start producing environmentally friendly e-passports. These are travel documents that are equipped with an electronic chip. 

Our goal: to reduce the footprint of an e-passport by 50 percent. It is already becoming apparent that the greatest impact will come from efficient manufacturing techniques, the use of recyclable materials and more environmentally friendly means of transport for the delivery of e-passports.

Sustainable software

Computer software also causes CO2 emissions. We design and develop sustainable software solutions that keep CO2 emissions as low as possible. To this end, we develop software solutions with optimized energy consumption. They consume fewer physical resources and use the energy they need more intelligently. In this way, we help to reduce the digital CO2 footprint of our customers. 

Digital Twins

A major lever in the sustainable transformation is the digitalization of our products, because digital means dematerialized. We are talking about "digital twins": a digital twin is the digital model of a real object. We supplement existing solutions with digital components to give our customers more freedom of choice. Such as the eSIM, which is installed directly in the mobile phone and thus requires less material and transport than the physical SIM card. Or a payment card that you carry in your wallet as a physical version and have on your mobile phone as a digital version. Other examples include central bank digital money (CBDC) as a supplement to cash, as well as digital identities in addition to physical documents – for us, physical and digital products and services go hand in hand as "digital twins".
