Systems Engineer / Network Administrator

Giesecke+Devrient Currency Technology is seeking a Systems Engineer / Network Administrator to join our growing team in Vaughan, ON. We are an established organization with a strong global presence and excellent reputation as one of the leaders in our industry.

Provides all aspects of local and wide area network support including: installation, maintainance of hardware and software, troubleshoot network problems, set up,configuration and support of internal and/or external networks.  Develop,and maintain all systems, applications, security, and network configurations.  Troubleshoot network performance issues, create and maintain a disaster recovery plan.  Recommend upgrades, patches, new applications and equipment and also provide technical support and guidance to users.  Provide end user support, perform system backups and data recovery, monitor and tune system software, peripherals, and networks, resolve LAN/WAN communications problems, and provide Help Desk Support.  Give guidance and assistance to junior level employees. 
Assist users in defining their system requirements and develop cost effective solutions to meet those needs.  Assure system reliability, data security, and disaster recovery.  The Network Administrator is responsible for operational reports.
The candidate will provide secondary support specific to the G&D R&D software development tools including: TFS, SAP Business Objects, ClearQuest, ClearCase, Doors,  Enterprise Architect, Test Manager and relational databases.

Systems Engineering / Projects (SWS)                                                                     

  • Maintain close relationship with development, test and implementation teams and regularly interface with staff to understand and resolve environment challenges
  • Analyze requirements, research and propose solutions for technical aspects of the project
  • Provide engineering/architectural assistance to internal and external teams
  • Provide solution troubleshooting during implementation
  • Analyze, propose infrastructure best practices to improve the development and support process
  • Design and develop demo environments for sales and project management teams including standalone and cloud solutions

Internal Infrastructure                                                                     

  • Analyze requirements, research and implement infrastructure solutions
  • Manage/Maintain and expand Virtual Infrastructure
  • Regularly review systems health to optimize functionality and plan for growth
  • Interface with global IT and align technology with company best practices
  • Propose and work with global IT to implement BNPO specific infrastructure and security requirements
  • Stay up to date with current technology          
  • Perform system back-ups and data recovery
  • Create and maintain departmental procedures and documentation
  • Document network configuration and update as needed
  • Ensure software licensing compliance of all network and PC based software applications
  • Assign specified work or functional activities.  Give direction, resolve problems, prepare schedules and set deadlines to ensure timely completion of work
  • Prepare reports and records of department activities for management
  • Ensure all personnel are cross-trained and experienced in each other’s routine duties
  • Provide guidance and leadership to junior level employees 

Network Administration

  • Serve as primary coordinator for helpdesk function
  • Man the Help Desk phone for a portion of the day
  • Resolve questions or dispatch calls for later resolution
  • Research answers to questions
  • Provide status to customers
  • Maintain call records and prepare reports
  • Maintain Bulletin Boards or other on-line help systems to communicate information to customers
  • Maintain strong focus on Customer Satisfaction
  • Install, support and provide general assistance to users of PC applications including word processors, spreadsheets, graphics packages, database management systems, electronic mail and communications
  • Administer adds and changes of users on the network.  Provide user training
  • Install and maintain PCs, printers and other network equipment

Capabilities Required - Intermediate to expert knowledge of the following technologies:

  • IBM ClearQuest – installation, training and usage
  • IBM Clearcase – installation, training and usage
  • Citrix – understanding of managing Citrix terminal sessions and usage
  • MS Visual Studio – installation and usage
  • Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS) – installation and usage
  • SAP Business Objects – installation and usage
  • Relational Databases – understanding, installation and usage


  • 4 year degree in Computer Science or related field
  • 7 years of related experience or a combination of education and experience 
  • 5 years of experience with operating systems and PC LAN and WAN environments including Novel, Windows, and UNIX
  • Cisco proficiency – Moderate level proficiency with 29xx/38xx series switches, 29xx/43xx series routers
  • VMWare proficiency – Moderate to expert level proficiency with VMWare Center 6.5 & related products
  • Linux proficiency – Moderate level Linux administration proficiency (RHEL)
  • 5 years of experience supporting PC based applications and executing a lead role in a help desk environment
  • Significant experience interfacing with end users
  • Ability to plan and coordinate different projects simultaneously and work with minimal supervision is required.
  • A thorough understanding of system administrator tasks
  • Able to understand network concepts and configure servers
  • Understand systems and processes in a service environment, e.g. finance, inventory, purchasing and receiving
  • Must be organized, self motivated and self disciplined
  • Strong interpersonal skills are a must
  • Ability to make recommendations for continuous quality improvements in all areas of accountability
  • Flexibility to work long hours as necessary and fulfill other duties as assigned
