03 Architects Win Competition for New Technology Campus at G+D Headquarter

10/05/2019     Munich

Global security technology group Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) is working with implementing company MC Grundstücksgesellschaft to enhance the G+D company headquarters in Munich’s Bogenhausener Tor development through the addition of a new technology campus. The winner of an architectural competition to design the campus has now been selected by a prestigious panel of judges.

A design from Munich-based architecture firm 03 Architekten took first place; second place was secured by Henn Architekten, also located in the Bavarian capital, while Munich-based Steidle Architekten came in at joint third with Richard Meier & Partners of New York and Los Angeles. A total of eleven architectural firms were invited to develop architectural and spatial planning concepts for the new technology campus. The panel convened on May 3 to select the four prizewinners, based on comprehensive evaluation criteria. There was a particular focus on the topics of energy efficiency and ecology, and the new building will be certified by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), among other bodies.

The expert judges on the prestigious jury included renowned architects Prof. Hannelore Deubzer and Prof. Dietrich Fink from Munich, architect Hadi Teherani from Hamburg, landscape architect Prof. Uta Stock-Gruber and Head of Urban Planning for the City of Munich, Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Merk. Other judges included Verena von Mitschke-Collande, shareholder of Giesecke+Devrient GmbH, Marian von Mitschke-Collande, Managing Director of MC Grundstücksgesellschaft, and various political representatives from the city.

“I am delighted at this outstanding competition result. The clear goal is to implement the design that was awarded first place. We will immediately begin testing and discussions with a view to achieving that. The 03 Architects design successfully addresses the transition from the outer city to the inner city center, and will serve as a city gateway with the Bavaria Towers,” city planner Prof. Dr. Merk said as she commented on the judges’ decision.

“It has been an extremely exciting competition with a superb selection of architects, both young and renowned, and international and local,” commented Marian von Mitschke-Collande, a representative of the builders. “We would like to congratulate the winners, who have developed particularly innovative solutions for the huge challenge posed in reconciling strict urban planning requirements with flexible use of the space, as well as sustainability and economic efficiency within the building. We will now decide, in close collaboration with the City of Munich, how the new construction project will be implemented after the upcoming optimization phase during the summer,” adds von Mitschke-Collande.

The construction project will be implemented as a completely self-sufficient building on the southwest section of the Giesecke+Devrient site at Prinzregentenstraße 157. The building will offer high-quality office space for digital companies within the security sector, as well as other technology companies operating in a similar business environment. It will also be open to retail and catering companies.

The models from the architectural competition will go on display in the City of Munich’s Department for Urban Planning and Building Regulation on Monday May 20, 2019.
