Giesecke & Devrient secures Life-Saving Device for the Mining Industry

22/11/2016 Sao Paulo/Munich Giesecke+Devrient

Sao Paulo/Munich, 22 November 2016. Giesecke & Devrient and Robbiot have provided the more and more important LoRa ecosystem with a secure wearable that can protect workers in hazardous areas to prevent accidents. In this case study both companies are working together with Massari Mineracao (Mining) in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

“This cooperation shows that the LoRa ecosystem is getting more important for the LPWAN IoT”, says Carsten Ahrens, Group Senior Vice President Division Telecommunication Industries at Giesecke & Devrient. “Research today is expecting this Low Power Wide Area Network market to cover half of the solutions for deployments in the IoT-Business within the upcoming years. Therefore we are very happy to be amongst the first to provide the needed security solutions for the Industry.” In this use case G&D supports the mining industry. Besides this G&D’s solutions will support the growth and adoption of LoRa technology in the future.

“It is great to benefit from the long time and profound experience that G&D brought into this project as specialist in the telecommunication business”, says Roberto Williams, CEO of Robbiot. “Their solution minded approach for this use case helped to leverage the information security to other business models and sectors.” The now used module by Massari delivers continuous monitoring on a real time dashboard. The data transmitted from the module through the network and to the application dashboard is protected end to end with G&D’s key management technologies. The data gathered can help to prevent accidents because it monitors fall areas, radiation and noise levels, but also delivers the exact position of the worker.

The technology utilized in a LoRaWAN network is designed to connect low-cost, battery-operated sensors over long distances in harsh environments that were previously too challenging or cost prohibitive to connect. With its unique penetration capability, a LoRaWAN gateway deployed on a building or tower can connect to sensors more than 10 miles away or to water meters deployed underground or in basements. G&D provides the required end to end security to secure the information that is being shared and gathered within the system. This is the first project in the world that has used additional security that goes beyond the security provided with LoRa WAN standards for Critical IoT infrastructure deployments.
