Connected Cars – Future Mobility Has Already Begun to Take Shape

Society is becoming increasingly urbanized – for example, by 2050 the Japanese population will be living almost exclusively in cities and around 83% of the German population will be city-dwellers. This means new mobility concepts are needed. Cars will remain a driving force. However, unlike today, the vehicles of the future will almost all be connected cars, i.e. fully networked vehicles. Cars will turn into independent mobile eco-systems with specific services. Connectivity is already an important feature today – and thanks to the introduction of eCall, every new car in Europe should come with a communications unit with integrated SIM module by 2018 at the latest. Automotive manufacturers are currently already focusing on eCall, autonomous driving, Car-to-X communication, and mobility and telematics services. In contrast, consumers are currently more interested in connectivity applications such as WiFi for passengers or external internet connections for streaming, receiving navigation data, and other options. A range of new services should be available in future in this sector, including pay-as-you-drive insurance, extra functions that can be booked on a temporary basis, or functions assigned to individual users. Autonomous driving is yet another scenario in which connectivity plays a decisive role. Alongside traditional automotive manufacturers, companies from entirely different sectors are entering the market, e.g. Google.

Connectivity also Means Risks – Security is the Key

Cybersecurity is becoming more important as everything become more closely linked. The growing number of network connections needs to be secured reliably, otherwise connected cars could pose massive risks – current examples have proven this in dramatic fashion. New mobility concepts such as personalized car sharing also require secure and trustworthy digital identities for users, service providers, and, not least, vehicles themselves. However, security should not be implemented to the detriment of manufacturers or consumers – automotive OEMs are interested in efficient processes, while drivers want the new options to be user-friendly. Secure Thanks to Connected Cars – Automatic Emergency Call Saves Valuable Rescue Time

A nightmare for any driver: You are trying to avoid an animal on the road and you lose control of the vehicle. Before you can react, the car leaves the road and crashes into the trees alongside. And of course this happens in the middle of nowhere, not in a well-populated area. There is no help in sight – particularly disastrous if you are injured and have no way of attracting attention.

Connected cars are the ideal solution for such situations, thanks to the automatic emergency call function. This technology means that they can make an emergency call automatically by themselves, within around 20 seconds of a crash. This saves vital time for drivers, who will receive the help they require even if they were unable to make the call themselves. As of March 31, 2018, all new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in the European Union must be equipped with eCall; such a system is already in place in Russia, known as ERA-GLONASS.

The technological basis in the vehicle is the Telematics Control Unit (TCU), equipped with a secure G&D SIM module, e.g. SkySIM Argo. This ensures mobile network connection for phone calls or internet access. In emergencies, the system changes over automatically to the eCall emergency call network within a few seconds. Thanks to eSIM management and Over-the-Air (OTA) technology, automotive manufacturers can deliver their vehicles with a pre-installed eCall subscription, or they can choose a different international option. This allows them to comply with various different national legal requirements and settings. SIM modules can also be supplied without specific subscriptions (white label SIM), i.e. not assigned to any particular network operator, which allows manufacturers to be flexible in terms of target markets for their vehicles.

The workshop is always on board in a connected car – remote maintenance is the keyword. Cars have been collecting electronic data about vehicle processes and faults for a while. However, workshops have previously always required physical access to the vehicle in order to read out this data. The only way in was via an on-board-diagnostics (OBD) interface, a connected computer and special manufacturer software. One reason for this was security – access to the OBD system also opens up the path to the entire vehicle management system. The current cases of hacked vehicles provide clear proof of what consequences this could have.

Trusted Service Management to ensure Driver: Data Security and Privacy

As an established partner for M2M security, G&D has solved this problem: You will no longer have to visit the workshop for some maintenance tasks in the future. Secure remote maintenance allows experts to access the vehicle diagnostics system via a network connection. If, for example, a warning light goes on, the driver can contact the workshop directly. The mechatronics engineer can then check what sort of fault this is and can go through further procedures with the driver. Some processes, such as required software updates, can even be remotely carried out immediately. The connection is incredibly secure – only authorized persons can access the system; data is encrypted; only signed firmware can be installed. Secure identity management for all persons and devices involved is obviously vital .

Until recently, M2M SIM modules (and cards) have been personalized with all their network operator details at the end of the production process at the SIM manufacturer. G&D eSIM management has turned the established SIM production world upside down: It is now possible to also personalize SIMs securely and remotely after they have been delivered.

How To Build A Car That Connects Wherever It Is Shipped To?

This is an incredible advantage, particularly in the automotive sector. All the processes in this sector are focused on maximum efficiency, and just-in-time manufacturing is standard. eSIM management facilitates this, as installed SIMs do not have to be configured before soldering. Instead, they can be loaded with data at any given time between manufacture and delivery. The vehicles can therefore be used in a wide range of different locations and can be adapted quickly to local (e.g. country-specific) requirements. If the vehicle owner or contract model changes during its service life, the data on the SIM can also be modified or removed at any time. This is particularly useful for used cars, company cars or in the fleet management sector , as, for example, employees could be promoted within a company and receive a different company car. It also makes ID management easier and more secure – connected cars can be adapted to the current driver at any time. This makes the implementation of modern pay-as-you-drive models for car sharing or insurance easier and more secure.
