6G: intelligent connectivity for everything

In terms of connectivity, 2019 was transformational. It was the year that 5G was launched in South Korea, and then in other markets around the world, including the US, Germany, and China. The resulting faster data rates didn’t just help people watch movies and play games more efficiently. Technical advancements enabled massive IoT deployments and the first truly connected industries. Much of what we take for granted right now wouldn’t be possible without 5G.

But time and connectivity standards march on: 6G is expected to be ready for commercial rollouts around 2030.1 That promises to be just as much of a transformational moment as 5G was, a decade or so earlier. Much more than just being faster, 6G promises the dawn of an era where communication networks are augmented with computing and sensing capabilities, and artificial intelligence. In theory, this will seamlessly fuse the physical, digital, and virtual worlds, delivering smarter and more autonomous systems that benefit everyone.

To understand that, let’s first consider what makes 6G different from what we have right now.

6G: a new era

Among other things, 6G promises to come with – and deliver – the following:

  1. Incredible speed, minimal latency

    It is projected that 6G will deliver data speeds up to 1 terabit per second, with a sub-millisecond latency.

  2. Built-in AI

    6G has been designed with AI: it is built in, so to speak. A 6G network will thus benefit from predictive maintenance, self-optimization, and even “heal” itself when required.

  3. Integrated sensing and communication

    Beyond transmitting data, 6G networks will detect position, movements, and physical conditions: they will perceive their environments, and react to them.

  4. Truly global connectivity

    Terrestrial networks will converge with satellite networks, providing coverage in the remotest regions. This builds upon the work being done with non-terrestrial networks (NTN) right now.

  5. Measurable sustainability gains

    The new networks are being designed to consume less power and leave a smaller environmental footprint.

  6. Security and resilience

    Every layer of the architecture has been built to exacting standards of identity and encryption, so trust is maintained. 

Of course, 6G won’t just magically appear. Its development builds upon the benefits that 5G Advanced is already delivering. More than people and things, homes, factories, even cities will be active participants in an ecosystem that is built to be adaptive. This extends to better gaming, metaverse experiences, and the like. Beyond entertainment and communication, advances in predictive health, including wearables monitoring parameters and sharing them with health providers in real time, will deliver huge value to users. This is just one example, of course.

Industries that will benefit from 6G

If you’re wondering how the digital transformation to come would impact enterprises, here are just a few examples of fields where 6G promises to be revolutionary.

Mobility
We’ve already mentioned autonomous vehicles. Those are embedded in a larger environment of smart mobility, which includes traffic systems that respond to changes in their environment. This all depends upon ultra-low-latency connectivity, high-precision sensing, and global satellite integration. Which 6G will deliver.

Manufacturing 
Long a dream, fully-digital factories can become a reality, complete with predictive controls and real-time monitoring equipped with AI-optimization. Such a factory could deliver a wealth of actionable data to human supervisors, and optimize itself across numerous parameters, including energy consumption. 

Healthcare 
AI diagnostics and continuous health monitoring – as mentioned above – will be enabled. Remote surgery performed while the patient is still at home could become a reality (at least in terms of technology). Emergency response will be significantly enhanced, with better triage possible at the accident site itself. 

Smart cities 
An era of truly intelligent infrastructure could be at hand, with transport, energy, and safety – among other areas – going to the next level with integrated sensing and advanced data analytics. To take just one example, bus routes optimized to hit green lights and avoid traffic congestion will be able to pick up more people and deliver them to their destinations quicker and more safely.

Agriculture and related fields 
Better sensors equipped with higher data speeds and embedded in smart sensory environments will deliver measurable benefits, including precision farming that responds to minute changes in the weather.

Challenges aplenty

None of this should be taken to mean that such a fundamental transformation will be easy. Context-aware networks and more autonomous devices sound great, but they add layers of complexity to what is already a highly complicated and dynamic environment. Nowhere is this more evident than in the IoT.

There are technical issues, including spectrum availability. “Next-generation 6G networks will require up to three times more mid-band spectrum than is typically available today to keep pace with surging demand for data, AI-powered services and advanced digital applications,” states a recent report.3

There is the sensitive topic of energy efficiency. AI’s power drain is well-documented. 6G is designed to be more sustainable than earlier iterations, but this will remain a talking point. Global standards are another issue, though bodies such as the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and the UN’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU) bring diverse stakeholders to the table.

Certainly regulations will differ from market to market. Global players will have to manage the paradox of something that is designed to be universal – “the intelligent connectivity of everything” – being constrained by local rules. Further, business models and strategy will differ across markets. Navigating new waters requires both local knowledge and technical expertise. 

Finally, there is the question of security. Devices need to manage identities, credentials, and policies dynamically, across satellite and terrestrial domains. Secure connectivity management is critical to managing the transformation to 6G.

Looking ahead

Technologies that already exist – such as eSIM, iSIM, and remote SIM provisioning, or RSP – will remain crucial when 6G arrives. So too will connectivity and life cycle management of all the billions of devices that require secure and ubiquitous connections. Global interoperability will depend upon trust, which is contingent upon best-in-class security. AI-enhanced security will be required to preserve both network integrity and user privacy – already key talking point already globally – in increasingly autonomous systems.

6G represents a huge strategic opportunity across industries, and particularly for IoT players. It is still on the horizon, but the clock is ticking. However, there are ways to prepare.

Among other things,

  • Deploy 5G Advanced networks. They are already equipped with AI-driven orchestration: 6G builds upon this.
  • If not using them already, pivot to eSIM and iSIM in devices, for secure and scalable connectivity.
  • Implement lifecycle and connectivity management solutions.
  • Investigate and invest in secure digital identities: these will be foundational to the new era.
