Spotlight Video: World of cash - casinos in the US

Casinos in the United States aren’t just a staple of popular culture through heist films, extravagant shows, and rock-star consumption. They’re also finely honed financial entities that create a lot of cash, which requires careful management. The larger casinos function as their own cash centers. Automation and the right partnerships make this possible, as this new video, part of a new G+D animated series, makes clear. You will want to enter the unique world of an American casino.

Slot machines and table games in commercial casinos in the US generated almost $44 billion in revenue in 2022, according to Forbes.1 There are over 3,500 casinos in the region (including Canada), catering to millions of people who flock there for a good time: to gamble, and also to partake of the various other hospitality offerings these venues have, including extravagant shows, restaurants featuring cuisine from around the world, and nightclubs.

Cash plays a significant part: in fact, it literally flows through this high-stakes, high-energy environment. When you consider that the largest property in the US (the WinStar World Casino in Oklahoma) boasts over 12,000 slot machines, you’re looking at a business that requires thinking at scale. The larger casinos run cash operations that are very much like cash centers.

Processing all that cash, whether in in a count room, the main vault, or the cashier’s cage, is a process that requires planning and management. “Deposits” happen at internal cash points, through table games, slot machines, food and beverage outlets, retail, and the like. The slot machine itself houses a cassette that takes in banknotes and coins of different denominations. That cassette must be brought to the count room for its contents to be validated against the report from the slot machine; the deposit is then verified, counted, and sorted. Then it must be secured, in a way that would make even “Ocean’s Eleven” have second thoughts.

In today’s environment, making all those components work together at the required level of security and speed requires automation. This includes off-peak maintenance and migration to new systems, on-site training, and on-call service. Finding the right partner who can deliver all of this is key to managing a casino’s needs optimally, without calling a halt to operations.

Florida’s Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino discovered that partner in G+D. With its range of currency management systems and the software to negotiate a variety of use cases, G+D has the expertise and background to deliver the automation any casino needs to keep the excitement bubbling non-stop, and to keep the river of cash flowing – as this video shows.
