However, the sheer volume of content, and the sophistication of new threats like deepfakes and AI-generated content , has escalated at a pace no human moderation team can possibly track. Online platforms, including social media, gaming, market places and dating apps, face enormous pressure from users demanding safer online spaces, advertisers wanting brand protection, and regulators introducing new stringent laws. Addressing these issues has become critical, yet many organizations lack the know-how and bandwidth to build robust solutions on their own.

Recognizing this escalating challenge, we dug a bit deeper and discovered a growing investment space: Trust & Safety. To understand the full scope and dynamics of this market, we examined over one hundred startups, exploring a variety of solutions from disinformation and deepfake detection to content moderation tools and platforms. Our research included conversations with experts across the spectrum – content moderators at large social platforms, academic researchers specializing in social platform governance, and former Trust & Safety professionals from giants such as Google and X.
