LTE: The all-IP generation of mobile networks
The appetite for more data capacity has grown exponentially since the introduction of smartphones as well as USB dongles for PCs and tablets. LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the latest generation of mobile network technology introduced to provide an all-IP-based mobile network infrastructure with greatly improved data bandwidth capacity. This new technology is quickly winning acceptance as MNOs (mobile network operators) move to ensure their customers sufficient capacity for their mobile lifestyles with social networking and ubiquitous Internet access. The expansion towards data-based services calls for a reaction on the part of mobile operators. Without further development of existing mobile networks, it will not be possible to accommodate all this data as well as the rapid growth in the number of M2M devices that have to be constantly connected and support upcoming NFC technology.
LTE must be compatible with earlier network generations – GSM, UMTS and CDMA – as these established networks will be in place for many years to come. The SAE (System Architecture Evolution) core network architecture of LTE will ensure this interoperability. LTE is based on a fully IP-based flat network, which means that the data transfer between network nodes is based on the IP rather than telecom-specific standards. This leads to large savings in investments and operational costs due to there being fewer network nodes and thanks to the re-use of existing commercial IP technology.
