Veridos Achieves Historic Milestone in Bangladesh with Over Ten Million ePassports Issued

04/05/2023 Berlin Veridos

Veridos, a leading global provider of identity solutions, and the Department of Immigration & Passport (DIP) of Bangladesh have written a success story with the introduction of new ePassports. The large-scale project, which started in 2018, includes not only new travel documents, but also the development of the entire value chain in the South Asian country.

The ten million ePassports issued represent a significant step in Bangladesh's transition to the latest generation of high-tech travel documents with the highest security standards. The e-passports are personalized with Veridos' CLIP ID technology. The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) compliant documents will make it much easier for Bangladeshi citizens to enter and leave the country and provide a new level of security.

The large-scale project led by Veridos and the DIP also includes the training of local professionals and the establishment of a local ePassport production site. Thanks to the extensive knowledge transfer and close cooperation between the two partners, the factory set up for the local production of ePassports has already exceeded the initial target of 3.5 million travel documents per year by two million at full capacity. Veridos has also successfully trained approximately one thousand local specialists.

"The partnership with Veridos has not only enabled us to provide our citizens with secure documents, but has also created new jobs and helped train our local workforce," said Major General Md. Nurul Anwar, Director General at the Department of Immigration and Passport in Bangladesh. "With the modern technology of the new ePassports, we are keeping pace with our country’s economic position and promoting safe and convenient travel for our citizens."

The project is the result of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's forward-looking strategic decision to seek a deep technological partnership between Bangladesh and Germany. Veridos’ commitment also serves as a model for further investment by German companies in this economically strong, emerging country. The appeal of the new ePassports and the associated security systems will also make it easier for other countries to manage the entry of Bangladeshi citizens.

“We congratulate all partners on this historic milestone and appreciate the trust that the Government of Bangladesh is putting into German solutions,” commented Jan Janowski, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the German Embassy Dhaka. “Veridos has set new standards in Bangladesh and we are looking forward to a further deepening of this mutually beneficial cooperation in the future.”

"Together with our partners in Bangladesh, we have put in place a comprehensive structure for the production of state-of-the-art documents, supporting to lead the country into a new era," said Marc-Julian Siewert, CEO of Veridos. "We will continue to work closely with the local authorities to assist Bangladesh move forward."
